“SS7 over IP”

Course Code

C40074

Description

This course provides the student with knowledge of SS7oIP Architecture as well as a background in next-generation telephony architectures. The focus of the course is the SigTRAN protocols that enables SS7 protocols run over IP networks.

Softswitch architectural elements are presented and the protocols used for interconnection between different nodes are presented.

Learning objectives

On completion of this course the participants will be able to:

  • Mention Next generation architectures, elements and protocols.
  • Explain the benefits of SIGTRAN protocol
  • Describe the Stream Transmission Control Protocol, SCTP
  • Explain how User Adaptation, UA, is performed
  • Describe how SCCP User Adaptation is performed
  • Describe in detail the broadband signaling transport architecture for ATM connectivity layers
  • List several ways in which MTP-3B packets differs from MTP3
  • Explain the purpose and significance of ATM Adaptation Layer 2 (AAL2)
  • Describe the AAL2 network architecture
  • Explain the role of BICC in a Multi-service network
  • List Gateway Control Protocol (GCP) commands and the format of command descriptors
  • Explain the use of the GPRS Tunneling Protocol (GTP)
  • List the major functions of the Radio Access Network Application Part (RANAP)
  • Explain the SIP/SIP-I/SIP-T protocol and its implementation in a softswitch solution
  • Understand the role of H.323 protocol and its implementation in a softswitch solution
  • Understand the interworking between SS7 and SIP/H.323
  • Explain the interwork between BICC, Q.AAL2, RANAP and GCP in a typical circuit mode call setup scenario in WCDMA Systems network.
  • Explain the interwork between BICC, PNNI, Access Signaling and GCP in a typical circuit mode call setup scenario..

Target audience

The course is designed for technical staff, Core Network Engineers and Core Network Specialists that need to know how SS7 is implemented in a Softswitch solution and how to perform SS7 over IP

Prerequisites

The participants should have successfully completed the following courses:

“GSM Basics”, “WCDMA Basics”, “SS7 Signaling” or equivalent knowledge.

Duration and class size

The recommended length of the course is 3 days depending on the participants’ background. The maximum number of participants is 16.

However it is easy to adapt the course length to the actual needs, thanks to the modular structure.

Learning situation

This course is based on theoretical instructor-led lessons given in a classroom environment.
